Vikrant Massey and Sanya Malhotra, embodying two lovers absconding from a hateful world, deliver a pair of impressive performances. We have seen this before on the screen but seldom in a narrative capsule so taut and compelling. Young people in love have to respect tradition. In the dystopian universe that Love Hostel portrays, honour killings are commonplace and self-appointed guardians of morality hold sway. A bit later in the gritty, tensile drama about an interfaith marriage and its repercussions, a right-thinking lawyer who helps another runaway couple - the film's two protagonists - falls foul of an assassin on the prowl. In these opening moments of the blandly titled Love Hostel, writer-director Shanker Raman delivers a grim reminder of the absolute lawlessness that prevails in this neck of the woods. But fear is writ large on their faces because they probably know that nothing, be it a judge's order or a safe home, can save them from the ire of the girl's family. Her husband reassuringly puts his hand on hers. She wants the world to know that she is now legally wedded to the boy she has run away with. The camerawork and background score also give the proceedings an aptly dreary feel while the editing never once lets up the tension or allows your attention to waver.A newly married Haryanvi girl records a video message for her father. Director Shanker Raman has come a long way since the good intent but seesaw execution of his last film, Gurgaon, with Love Hostel playing as an edge-of-the-seat thriller, where everybody’s fair game and you need to steel your own nerves for the cold and dark narrative. Sanya Malhotra proves a brilliant foil, her desperation and nervous energy never concealing Jyoti’s fortitude and resolve while Raj Arjun and the rest of the supporting cast are also on point. His mere presence chews up every frame, his Haryanvi accent couldn’t be more authentic even by an actual Haryanvi, and it’s a masterclass in how an actor express everything through cold stares and menacing expressions.
